Course Description

Global competence is an emerging term to describe a set of knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that enable us to thrive in today’s interconnected, uncertain world, where isolated knowledge of certain school subjects is not enough for our students to make the most of their talent and lead a happy, fulfilling life.

In this highly interactive course, participants will explore topics such as:

  • culture and identity;
  • differences in values and communication styles and how to bridge them;
  • 21st century skills;
  • the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how to teach them;
  • PISA’s definition of global competence and why measuring it might matter;
  • ways to incorporate global competence in your own lessons regardless of the subject you teach.

The international nature of the course helps underline the importance of global competence and learn first-hand how we all bring different backgrounds to a situation and how we can overcome arising difficulties.

As befitting the 21st century, expect guidance and cooperation more than lectures and passive consumption of pre-digested knowledge. Your experience matters just as much as anybody else’s!

The course will be shaped by participants’ needs including their subjects, and the age groups they each work with.

Objectives

  4. understand the concept of global competence and start thinking of how to incorporate its development into my own teaching practice;
  5. be better equipped to help my students become globally competent;
  6. create a lesson plan/project plan relating to my own teaching context.
